Workplace Type: Hybrid
Employment Type: Full-time
Pay / Compensation: $110,000 – $140,000/yr

About the Role

United States Cold Storage (US Cold) owns and operates one of the most complex temperature-controlled logistics networks in North America. Our systems coordinate the storage and movement of food across state-of-the-art distribution centers and highly automated warehouse facilities.

The Database Engineer owns the health, performance, and evolution of the database platforms powering our warehouse management systems — covering existing Oracle infrastructure on OCI and modern PostgreSQL and MongoDB Atlas systems deployed in Azure microservices architecture. You will partner with Infrastructure, DevOps, and Software Engineering to design, deploy, and scale database systems, reduce operational toil via CI/CD, and provide mission-critical production support.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Maintenance & Patching: Monitor, patch, and maintain existing Oracle database infrastructure on OCI to ensure high uptime and reliability for production workloads.
  • Performance Optimization: Tune and optimize Oracle and PostgreSQL performance through query plan analysis, indexing strategies, and schema-level enhancements.
  • Cloud Database Architecture: Architect, deploy, and manage modern cloud database systems in Azure, focusing on PostgreSQL and MongoDB for ongoing modernization initiatives.
  • HA/DR Posture: Own High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) across intra-region and cross-region failure scenarios, validating RPO/RTO objectives with business stakeholders.
  • CI/CD & Automation: Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions and Jenkins to automate schema migrations, environment provisioning, and repetitive tasks.
  • Database Observability: Implement query performance monitoring, capacity planning, and cost optimization across cloud platforms using Dynatrace and Azure Monitor.
  • Production Support: Provide real-time operational support for mission-critical database workloads, including on-call rotation participation and rapid incident response.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a DBA or Database Engineer, with strong proficiency in Oracle and PostgreSQL.
  • Query Optimization: Fluency in PL/SQL, including designing and tuning high-performance queries, indexing, and execution plans.
  • Production Troubleshooting: Proven track record diagnosing database-tier issues including performance bottlenecks, locking, and replication delays.
  • Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience administering database infrastructure in the cloud (Azure preferred, OCI).
  • Infrastructure as Code & CI/CD: Hands-on experience deploying database infrastructure using Terraform or Ansible, alongside CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Experience building metrics and alerting for critical database systems using tools like Dynatrace or Azure Monitor.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience administering and scaling NoSQL/document databases such as MongoDB Atlas.
  • Hands-on usage of AI-assisted engineering and observability tools.

Benefits & Perks

  • Comprehensive Health, Dental, Vision, and Prescription Coverage
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with Company Match
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) and Commuter Benefits (NJ)
  • Health Flexible Spending Account (FSA) & Dependent Care FSA
  • Life, AD&D, and Short/Long-Term Disability Insurance
  • Educational Assistance & Professional Development Programs
