About the Role

Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Datastore team, which defines the foundational data model and centralized repository/API for clinical brain data. This role provides deep technical leadership across PostgreSQL data modeling, performance optimization, and operational management of high-throughput transactional backends.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and scale backend systems for data infrastructure using PostgreSQL and event-driven architectures.
  • Operate production PostgreSQL systems, managing upgrades, replication, backup/restore, connection pooling, and autovacuum tuning.
  • Lead schema design, complex query optimization, and zero-downtime migrations with row-level security (RLS).
  • Partner with clinical and software engineering teams to translate data platform requirements into robust services.
  • Profile complex database workloads, analyze EXPLAIN plans, and optimize indexing strategies.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization on database architecture and SQL best practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 7+ years of backend development experience, including 3+ years focused on data platforms and database infrastructure.
  • Deep expertise in PostgreSQL administration, data modeling, schema evolution under load, and performance tuning.
  • Strong SQL proficiency with hands-on experience reasoning about query plans and execution internals.
  • Experience with event streaming platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Kinesis).
  • Proficiency in Julia or Python, and familiarity deploying services in containerized Kubernetes environments.

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with GraphQL and PostGraphile.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Helm).
  • Familiarity using AI-assisted engineering tools in production workflows.
