About the Role

Peregrine Advisors is a rapidly growing AI and data innovation hub helping government solve hard problems and deliver better outcomes. As a Senior Data Engineer (SQL), you will own the data pipelines and databases behind a mission-critical federal enterprise data platform: their design, their performance and reliability, and the integrity of the data in them. This is a hybrid work arrangement based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, requiring United States citizenship and the ability to obtain a Public Trust determination.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Data Modeling & Schemas: Design logical and physical data models, building the schemas, indexes, views, stored procedures, and functions that implement them.
  • SQL Tuning & Performance: Write and tune complex Structured Query Language (SQL) by reading execution plans and adjusting indexes to handle high-volume query loads.
  • ETL/ELT Pipeline Support: Build and support ETL and ELT pipelines and Amazon S3 loads to keep data accurate, complete, and reliable.
  • Troubleshooting & Reliability: Track down performance, locking, replication, and data consistency problems, ensuring database availability through monitoring, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and high availability.
  • Security & Compliance: Secure data systems with least-privilege access, encryption, auditing, and compliance controls.
  • CI/CD & Infrastructure Integration: Work with architects, developers, and data engineers to move database changes through continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) and infrastructure as code.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on data engineering, database development, database engineering, software development, or comparable practical experience in support of enterprise applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

  • Advanced SQL skills across complex queries, views, stored procedures, and functions, together with relational design, normalization, and data modeling.
  • Performance and query tuning resolving slow queries, locking, and deadlocks through indexing and execution-plan work.
  • ETL and ELT development and data integration across AWS data services, such as Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), S3, and data migration services.
  • Data security controls including encryption, access management, auditing, and compliance.
  • Cloud-native application support in AWS through CI/CD and DevSecOps practices, including monitoring, backup and recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery.
