Role Overview

Black Kite is seeking a motivated Junior DevOps Engineer with hands-on experience in PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server, and a strong interest in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) technologies. In this role, you will own the management, optimization, and scaling of relational databases hosted on GCP (specifically Cloud SQL), collaborating closely with engineering teams to ensure performance, reliability, and high availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server databases on GCP (Cloud SQL).
  • Write, analyze, and optimize SQL queries for performance and scalability using execution plans and indexing strategies.
  • Support and maintain high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) architectures in cloud environments.
  • Execute routine database maintenance operations including index rebuilds/reorganizations, statistics updates, and backup/restore procedures.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot database performance bottlenecks within GCP environments.
  • Work alongside cross-functional engineering teams to improve database efficiency, schema design, and integration with GCP services (Compute Engine, IAM, networking).

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 1–2 years of database engineering experience, backed by a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Strong proficiency in writing clean, optimized SQL queries and understanding execution plans and indexing strategies.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)—specifically Cloud SQL—alongside foundational cloud networking, compute, and IAM concepts.
  • Understanding of high availability, replication concepts, and database monitoring/maintenance in Linux and/or Windows environments.
