Job Description

Company: Bitovi
Location: United States
Workplace Type: Remote
Employment Type: Full-time
Pay / Compensation: $120,000 – $190,000 per year + annual bonus

About the Role

Bitovi is looking for a PostgreSQL Database Consultant / Engineer to diagnose, stabilize, and tune large self-managed database environments. In this role, you will help enterprise clients run critical data platforms reliably, leveraging deep knowledge of Postgres internals from MVCC and autovacuum to query planning and WAL management.

Note: Candidates must be located in and authorized to work in the United States.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Stabilize Critical Systems: Audit configurations, maintenance, and indexing across enterprise PostgreSQL environments, identify root causes of instability, and implement fixes that measurably reduce production incidents.
  • Tune Performance and Reliability: Optimize autovacuum strategies, indexing, memory settings, and queries to ensure databases remain healthy under heavy production workloads.
  • Root Cause & Incident Analysis: Lead postmortems, conduct rigorous incident response, and communicate actionable findings to engineering teams and enterprise stakeholders.
  • Operational Procedures & Runbooks: Author runbooks, maintenance procedures, and disaster recovery plans to empower client teams after engagements.
  • Client Consulting & Architecture: Consult with enterprise clients on architecture, capacity planning, major version upgrades, and migration paths with minimal downtime.
  • Community & Knowledge Sharing: Present at conferences, deliver technical training, run local meetups, and create technical content around PostgreSQL best practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Deep PostgreSQL Administration: Substantial, hands-on production experience administering PostgreSQL on self-managed, on-premise infrastructure (beyond fully managed cloud services like RDS/Cloud SQL).
  • Vacuum & Engine Internals: Expert knowledge of vacuum and autovacuum tuning, thresholds, cost limits, transaction ID wraparound prevention, and index/table bloat remediation.
  • Indexing Mastery: Deep expertise designing and maintaining B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN, partial, and covering indexes, as well as safely rebuilding indexes in high-traffic production environments.
  • Configuration & Query Tuning: Advanced experience optimizing memory parameters, connection pooling limits, checkpoints, and WAL parameters, along with query analysis using EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) and pg_stat_statements.
  • High Availability & Replication: Hands-on experience with streaming/logical replication, failover testing, and orchestration tools such as Patroni or repmgr.
  • Disaster Recovery: Proven background managing backups, restore validation, and Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR) using tools like pgBackRest or Barman.
  • Connection Management: Experience configuring and operating connection poolers such as PgBouncer or Pgpool-II.
  • Monitoring & Metrics: Hands-on telemetry and monitoring setup with tools like Prometheus postgres_exporter, pgwatch, or Datadog.
  • Systems & OS Administration: Solid Linux systems administration skills focused on storage, filesystems, kernel parameter tuning, and troubleshooting resource contention.

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Configuration management experience for database fleets using Ansible or similar tools.
  • Experience running PostgreSQL on Kubernetes using operators such as CloudNativePG or Crunchy Postgres Operator.
  • Database automation and scripting skills in Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Security hardening experience, including role/privilege management, pg_hba.conf, TLS encryption, and pgAudit.
  • Exposure to heterogeneous database environments (such as Oracle or MySQL).

Benefits & Perks

  • Salary: $120,000 to $190,000 annually, depending on experience, plus annual bonus opportunity.
  • Remote Work: 100% remote flexibility (with occasional quarterly travel of 3–5 days).
  • Retirement: 401(k) matching program.
  • Paid Time Off: 4 weeks of PTO plus 8 paid company holidays.
  • Health Coverage: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance offerings.
  • Family Leave: Paid maternity and paternity leave.
  • Disability & Life: Short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage.
