About the Role

As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer, you will own the health, performance, and cost-efficiency of the databases that power our EMR and platform products, scaling the architecture cleanly as we grow.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Own the reliability, performance, and availability of all production Aurora MySQL databases across EHR, Data, and AI teams.
  • Manage database alerting and observability pipelines end to end utilizing Datadog and integrate into DevOps on-call rotations.
  • Implement automated safeguards, including termination of runaway queries and real-time visibility into active workloads.
  • Author and maintain operational database runbooks for rapid incident response.
  • Diagnose, optimize, and re-index problematic queries to minimize latency and system load.
  • Review new application queries before release, serving as a performance gatekeeper.
  • Architect and right-size Aurora reader topologies and read-routing strategies to eliminate over-provisioning.
  • Manage replication health, backups, restore testing, failover, and disaster recovery.
  • Establish secure schema-change and migration practices across teams.
  • Handle protected health information (PHI) responsibly within a HIPAA-compliant environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in database reliability engineering, database administration, or database engineering in production environments.
  • Deep expertise in MySQL and Aurora MySQL, including query optimization, execution-plan analysis, indexing, and replication.
  • Hands-on experience operating multi-reader Aurora or RDS clusters at terabyte scale, including read-routing and connection pooling.
  • Strong proficiency with database observability tooling such as Datadog, Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), Performance Insights, or Prometheus/Grafana.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Bash) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Operational depth in AWS RDS/Aurora cost optimization, including reserved capacity and storage tiering.
  • Proven experience in incident response, on-call rotations, and authoring runbooks.

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience deploying or managing cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift).
  • Experience working within HIPAA-regulated healthcare compliance environments.
  • Familiarity with query auto-remediation tooling (pt-kill / Percona Toolkit).
  • Application familiarity with PHP for effective query review.
