Job Description

Company: TrustEngine
Location: Remote
Workplace Type: Remote (100% Remote position, with a virtual office)
Employment Type: Permanent (Full-time implied by comprehensive benefits package including 401k, Medical/Dental/Vision, and PTO)
Pay / Compensation: Up to $149,500

About the Role

We are hiring a Lead Database & Data Platform Engineer to take full ownership of our relational database estate. We are hiring the person who will own the database and data estate at TrustEngine end to end: assess what we have, run a time-critical upgrade as the first job, and then set the direction and standards that mature the whole environment.

TrustEngine is the product of a merger, so we run two stacks — C#/.NET on Microsoft SQL Server, and TypeScript/JavaScript on MySQL — both in AWS. Our SQL Server is BYOL on EC2: we install, configure, and operate it ourselves, an on-premises setup that happens to live in AWS. MySQL runs on RDS.

The role sits on our Platform team and is the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams. The immediate need is someone who can hit the ground running on a time-critical OS upgrade before year-end; the longer-term job is to leave the estate in a state we can stand behind with customers, auditors, and our insurer.

Why this role: We are a merged company running two stacks, and the estate has not had a single accountable owner. We are looking for someone who wants to fix it properly rather than patch it, and who will be given the mandate to do so.

What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Take full end-to-end ownership of the relational database and data estate at TrustEngine.
  • Assess the inherited production environment, run a time-critical OS upgrade before year-end as the first job, and drive the environment to a measurably better state that stands up to customers, auditors, and our insurer.
  • Perform deep and current Microsoft SQL Server administration (the core of the role), including full installation, configuration, and operation on self-managed Windows Server instances on AWS EC2 (BYOL).
  • Manage Windows Server administration beneath live production instances, including OS upgrades and migrations.
  • Administer and maintain SQL Server high availability using Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • Handle MySQL administration on AWS RDS.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on data for both engineering teams, setting data standards and reviewing schema and data-access design across application teams.
  • Apply AI proficiency (e.g., Claude) to day-to-day workflows.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Deep and current Microsoft SQL Server administration experience.
  • Recent hands-on experience with full SQL Server installation and configuration on a server you manage yourself (Windows Server on EC2 or on-premises — not a managed service such as RDS or Azure SQL), including OS-level work beneath a live production instance.
  • Windows Server administration, including OS upgrades and migrations.
  • Profile Application Requirement: Must state the most recent SQL Server upgrade performed on your profile, including source and target versions, in-place or side-by-side, year, and the Windows Server version pairing. (Note: Career-span claims without versions will not be considered).
  • Experience with SQL Server high availability — Always On Availability Groups and failover clustering.
  • Experience with MySQL administration.
  • Proficiency with AWS services: EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • AI proficiency (e.g., Claude) applied to day-to-day work.
  • Prior end-to-end ownership of a production database estate, including assessing an inherited environment and driving it to a measurably better state.
  • Experience setting data standards and reviewing schema and data-access design across application teams.

Preferred / Bonus Qualifications (if applicable)

  • Snowflake administration and development — preferred (our data engineering team covers Snowflake day to day).
  • ETL pipelines and tools (e.g., Rivery, dbt).
  • Data warehouse design and development.
  • Data lake on S3.
  • BI/analytics and tools (e.g., Metabase, QuickSight).
  • Data governance and data quality practice.
  • SQL Server migration to a managed service (RDS or equivalent).

Benefits & Perks

  • Salary Range: Up to $149,500
  • Workplace: 100% Remote position, with a virtual office
  • Health Care Plan: Medical, Dental & Vision
  • Retirement Plan: 401k, IRA
  • Life Insurance: Basic, Voluntary & AD&D
  • Flexible Paid Time Off: Vacation, Sick & Holidays
  • Family Leave: Maternity, Paternity
  • Disability Insurance: Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Professional Growth: Training & Development
  • Wellbeing: Wellness Resources

Application Note: Please ensure your profile explicitly states the details of your most recent SQL Server upgrade (source and target versions, in-place or side-by-side, year, and the Windows Server version pairing), as career-span claims without versions will not be considered.
