About the Role
Join DigitalOcean’s Managed Databases (DBaaS) engineering organization to build the simplest scalable cloud. This high-impact IC4 role focuses on applying advanced subject-matter expertise across distributed control planes, database platform infrastructure, and production reliability for managed Postgres and MySQL workloads.
What You’ll Do / Key Responsibilities
- Architect and implement DBaaS platform systems: Design scalable control-plane and infrastructure components for improved throughput and multi-region operability.
- Own performance and resiliency outcomes: Improve resource utilization, fault tolerance, and availability by targeting I/O, CPU, and network bottlenecks under production load.
- Strengthen lifecycle capabilities: Ship improvements to automated failover, continuous backups, and point-in-time recovery (PITR).
- Operate what you build: Establish observability, failover, and recovery practices; participate in on-call duties.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems or data-plane/control-plane infrastructure.
- Database platform fluency: Working knowledge of relational database engine internals-specifically PostgreSQL and/or MySQL-including query performance and replication.
- Production depth: Proven track record diagnosing and solving complex, high-concurrency engineering problems in production cloud environments.
- Distributed systems mastery: Strong understanding of concurrency, failure modes, and performance optimization in production Linux/cloud environments.
Preferred / Bonus Qualifications (if applicable)
- Experience scaling services for compute, memory, and networking demands of data-intensive or AI inference-adjacent workloads.
- Track record of driving complex cross-team technical projects and mentoring engineers.
Benefits & Perks (if applicable)
- Reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
